JeeJee’s April Reading List Review

Last year I relaunched the Girl Be You Book Club it has helped me get out of the reading slump I was in. Since being a little girl I have always had a real love for reading.

I set a goal for last year to read 40 books, I was about 6 books shy of that goal. This year I said that I wouldn’t put that pressure on my love for reading.

The Girl Be You Book Club is still in full effect, I got a library card with an occasional stop into Barnes & Noble. While January was a great month, April has proved to be even better.

I’m currently reading my 4th book of the month. If you are looking for a new book to read here are my thoughts on the best reading month I have had so far.

First Born Girl, Bernice McFadden; I have always heard about Bernice McFadden but never read any of her books. In recent years I have heard so much about Bernice McFadden. The title alone pulled me in as I am a First Born Girl on both sides of my family. Not only is this a memoir there was so much of our history woven into her personal story. This memoir gives us a front row seat into the life of both Bernice McFadden and the women in her life who all happen to be first born girls. Her life is layered with choices that literally will hit your heart allowing you to see a bit of you through her story.

Blacktop Wasteland, SA Cosby; I didn’t think the author who wrote mystery/ thriller would become one of my favorite authors. This is probably the third SA Cosby book I have read. Cosby does an amazing job of introducing characters, telling their stories, pulling on the heart strings of the reader. Every page you read brings you closer with what you would choose in that situation. This book left me on the edge of my seat as I read. Highly recommend this book!

Good Dirt, Charmaine Wilkerson; April Book of the month for Girl Be You Book Club. Wilkerson did a wonderful job of telling this story of family tragedy while teaching us rich history lesson. My heart broke, rejoiced, wanted to get even with a few of the characters. I loved that this African-American family’s history was on display and not watered down at all. This was a great pick for our book club. Looking for a good book read this one.

Maame, Jessica George; I am only about 40 pages into this book. This book seems to be a great coming of age book with a girl who is learning to choose herself over being a people pleaser. I will keep you all posted on my rating of the book once I am done.
